CPD Webinar – Social Media Ban in Australia – Legal Implications for Social Media Providers

1 CPD Unit (Substantive Law)

Are clients (and their platform-provider customers) across Australia ready for the new social media minimum age regime? Which services are actually caught, what does “reasonable steps” compliance look like in practice, and what age assurance measures are considered acceptable under the eSafety Commissioner’s guidance? With the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024 now in effect (from 10 December 2025), advisers will increasingly be asked to help clients interpret obligations, manage risk, and respond to regulator expectations.

Join Elma Li from WRP Legal as she unpacks the key compliance obligations for social media providers under Australia’s new minimum age framework, and what professional advisers should be watching when advising platform operators, app businesses, or clients with youth-facing services and products.

In this webinar, Elma will cover:

  • who is impacted by the new law (including which services are likely to be captured as “age-restricted social media platforms” and how exclusions may apply);
  • the key obligations on social media providers, including what “reasonable steps” may look like to prevent under-16s from creating or keeping accounts;
  • age verification / age assurance measures that are generally considered acceptable (and which measures are unlikely to be sufficient on their own) in line with the eSafety Commissioner’s published guidance;
  • practical considerations for advisers, including implementation challenges, privacy-by-design, record keeping, and responding to regulator enquiries; and
  • whether there are similar bans or restrictions overseas, and what global trends may mean for clients operating across borders.

Whether you’re a lawyer, accountant, business adviser or business manager, this session will help you confidently spot the issues, ask the right questions of platform and technology clients, and translate the regime into practical risk and governance advice.

This webinar is suitable for professional advisers, accountants and lawyers and is pitched at an intermediate level.

The webinar runs for 1 hour and is being held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, 20 May 2026 Eastern Standard Time (10:00 AM WST). The cost is only $120. Register here now.
