Hi , Julie Mehretu set the auction record for an artist of African origin in 2023 when Walkers With the Dawn and Morning (2008) sold for $10,737,500 at Sotheby's New York on November 15, 2023, breaking her own record set just one month earlier at Sotheby's Hong Kong. Her top hammer has climbed from $74,310 in 2003 to the current $10,737,500 mark. Kabul (2013) is a monumental, roughly 8-by-12-foot painting built from layered architectural tracings of the Afghan capital under translucent washes of red and blue acrylic. The architectural large-scale canvases with a reduced palette have been the works represented in five of the top ten prices of her auction market. Each work is unique, but according to Masterworks' analysis, similar works by Mehretu have appreciated in 8% annually from 2011 to 2024.
In fact, Masterworks neighbors the Goldman Sachs headquarters in lower Manhattan, where a gigantic Mehretu work measuring 80 feet wide by 23 feet high spans their lobby. Just across the street, American Express also featured her artwork on a limited edition of their Platinum card in 2022. Mehretu is a MacArthur Fellow (2005) and is represented by Marian Goodman Gallery, White Cube, and Berggruen Gallery. In 2019, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art co-organized her mid-career survey, which opened at LACMA and traveled to the High Museum, the Whitney, and the Walker Art Center. Our findings show her work is held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Whitney, Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou.
