Hi , In May 2022, Ernie Barnes's The Sugar Shack (1976) sold for $15,275,000 at Christie's New York, more than 70 times its high estimate of $200,000. An outlier in his broader oeuvre, the result set the artist's auction record, one that has held through 2026. As recently as 2021, Barnes's record stood at $550,000; his top result in 1992 was just $1,656. The Trick Shot is a Barnes painting in his signature elongated-figure style, the choreographed, kinetic figures that defined his decades-long body of work depicting athletic and everyday life in America. Barnes spent five seasons as a professional offensive lineman in the AFL before retiring in the mid-1960s to paint full-time. His best-known image, The Sugar Shack, appeared on the cover of Marvin Gaye's I Want You (1976) and in the closing credits of the television series Good Times, placing the painting in front of millions of households decades before it ever entered an auction room. His work is held in the permanent collections of the California African American Museum in Los Angeles and the BYU Museum of Art in Provo, Utah. Notable private collectors include musicians Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, and professional athlete Malcolm Jenkins. The Trick Shot is available now with a total offering size of $280,000.
