Hi ,

On Monday evening at Christie's in Rockefeller Center, Alice Neel's Mother and Child (Nancy and Olivia) sold for $5.7mm with fees, a new auction record for the artist, and nearly double Christie’s high estimate.

Two things stand out. First, the previous record was $3mm in ‘21. Monday's sale reset Neel's ceiling by roughly 87% in a single hammer. Second, the work that did it was a double portrait of a mother and child.

That matters to us because we’re offering Alice Neel's Hubert Crehan and Sasha (1962), also a double portrait, of art critic Hubert Crehan holding his infant daughter Sasha. The subject is much more commercial and the quality is superior, but the composition lineage is similar: an adult figure cradling a child, painted in Neel's psychologically charged style.*

A few facts on our offering:

  • Internally appraised at $675,000.
  • Offering size: $527,000.
  • Her work hangs in the Met, MoMA, the Whitney, the Tate, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Nine of her top ten auction results, and majority of auction turnover, have come since 2021.
