Hi ,

Kazuo Shiraga was ordained as a Tendai Buddhist priest in 1971, taking the name Sodō, and continued painting from his Amagasaki studio for nearly four more decades, by suspending himself from a rope above his canvases and pushing oil paint across the surface with his feet. His auction record now stands at $10,406,616, set in 2018 at Sotheby's Paris with the 1959 work Takao, and it has held unbroken since.

Shintan is a foot painting from Shiraga's signature practice, a body of work he began developing in the early 1950s as a founding member of the Gutai Art Association. Each investing environment is unique, but according to Masterworks' analysis, Shiraga works have appreciated 78% of the time when resold at auction, with an average appreciation of 13% across 54 repeat-sale pairs from '03 to '25.

The Gutai Art Association, founded by Jirō Yoshihara in 1954, issued its 1956 manifesto calling for direct, physical engagement with materials, and the group is now widely regarded as one of the most influential postwar artist collectives of the 20th century. The 2013 Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum retrospective "Gutai: Splendid Playground", the first major US survey of the group, began a sustained repricing of Shiraga's market.

His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center, and the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art in Japan. He is represented in the United States by Mnuchin Gallery and Fergus McCaffrey.

Shintan is available now with a total offering size of $450,000.
