Hey Guest,

This week we're talking about knots. In hand embroidery there are some knots you want and some you don't. Let's start with the ones you don't want. If not done correctly, separating thread can be one of the easiest ways to turn thread into a giant, knotted mess. Read this blog post for tips on splitting apart your thread and avoiding tangles.

One type of knot you do want in embroidery are those that will end your thread on the back of your project. Like many things in hand embroidery, there are a few ways to do this. Choosing an ending knot can depend on the end use of the embroidery, the material, or be a bit of personal preference. In this blog post I share three options for knotting off your thread.

Now that we've covered the knots you don't want and the functional knots that are used to secure things, we can move on to decorative knots. Yes, there are even more knots in embroidery! These are fun ones through, I promise. Decorative knots add depth, dimension, and texture to an embroidery. Plus, they can be fun to stitch once you get the hang of them. In this blog post I share 10 knot stitches and how to create them.

Hopefully these blog posts help you feel more comfortable avoiding knots you don't want and making the ones you do want for your next embroidery project.

Happy stitching -Melissa

Landscape Embroidery Retreat

This fall I'm teaching my first ever week-long embroidery workshop! From September 14-18 you can bring a landscape to life with a needle and thread in my Stitched Landscape workshop at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking.  In this class you’ll learn helpful foundational skills for hand embroidery, how to create a wide variety of textural stitches, and compositional techniques. Building off these skills, you will then design a unique landscape. Landscapes can be imaginary or inspired by images brought from home. Along with hands-on guidance and materials, you will also receive a copy of my book, How to Embroider Texture and Pattern, as a take-home guide for continuing your embroidery journey to creating textural embroidered landscapes.
