Take a dive below the Mesozoic oceans with us today and explore the world of the mighty Ichthyosaurs! These marine reptiles ruled the oceans with streamlined bodies, long jaws, and great speed when swimming.

Fossils from the Late Triassic in North America indicate Ichthyosaur could grow to 42 feet in length and were deep-bodied with long fins. Some species even grew over 65 feet!

Of particular interest is the creature's body shape. It had a long round body with a fish-like tail and four large paddle flippers. Today, this body plan is also found in species like tuna and dolphins. Why? It's the perfect shape to propel through the water with a powerful tail. That made the Ichthyosaur one of the most formidable predators in the sea!

Ichthyosaur fossils have been incredibly important to paleontology. The earliest known finds came at the end of the 17th century and a complete skeleton was found by Joseph & Mary Anning in 1811, more than 40 years before Darwin's Origin of Species would introduce ideas of evolution to the field. Its discovery challenged ideas of Creationism and asked a serious question: What was this creature and where did it go?
