You were in the right spot. The storm showed up. You got home, opened your photos, and the best frame you had was a soft orange smear on a black background. This is not bad luck. It is three specific, fixable problems that catch almost everyone the first few times. Blurry means focus or camera shake. Blown out means the sky accumulated too much light while the shutter was open. Empty means you were leaving gaps between shots that the bolt fired right into. QUICK TIP

If you come home from a storm session with blown-out frames, open the RAW file before you change a single setting. What looks clipped on your camera LCD is almost always the JPEG preview, not the actual data. Pull the highlights slider all the way down in Lightroom or Capture One first. In most cases the bolt channel detail is sitting right there, fully recoverable. Only adjust your field settings if the RAW data itself is genuinely gone.
