The last class was about inflammation, and the part that stayed with people was the mood conversation. Inflammation and mood are, in essence, talking to each other — because the inflammatory chemicals your body makes cross into the brain and interfere with the production of the neurotransmitters that regulate mood, motivation, and the ability to feel pleasure.

That doesn’t mean every low mood is inflammation. It isn’t. But it explains something I’ve watched happen over and over in practice: when people start turning the inflammation down, mood tends to lift with it. Three short pieces of that class are below.

Tomorrow night I want to hand you the instrument panel. The blood tests your doctor routinely orders are designed to detect disease that’s already there. They are not designed to tell you where your health is heading. Those are two different questions, and only one of them is still useful while you have time to change the answer.

You’re not a passenger in your own body. You’re the driver. And drivers need to know how to read the dashboard.

One suggestion: if you have a recent lab report, dig it out and keep it handy. The class is a walk through the seven numbers I look at first, and it’s a lot more useful when you’re looking at your own.
