Happy birthday America! Today we celebrate 250 years of America and 250 years of American quilts!

Although quilting is much older than the USA and has found a home all around the world, it can’t be denied that quilting has always been special to us here.

American quilters have quilted for warmth, for art, for politics, for protest, and more. In fact, the story of our history is punctuated by quilts! Women made wholecloth quilts stitched out of necessity during the Revolutionary era and loved ones sent quilts to the front of the Civil War to comfort and protect their soldiers. Indigenous makers adapted the artform to incorporate their traditional patterns like the Morning Star, and enslaved women used quilting to tell stories and provide for their families.

Two hundred and fifty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence (and the stitching of the first American flag) we quilters are still here, making houses into homes, warming our loved ones, exploring our creativity, and telling our stories. Here’s to the next 250 years of American quilting!
