When I was growing up, we ate lots of food from the garden. Between my parents and grandparents we grew our own apples, peaches, pears, apricots, grapes, corn, tomatoes, rhubarb, peas, peppers, and on and on and on.

But one day when I was a teenager, I was watching tv and the camera followed a woman out into her yard where she picked a bowl full of fresh lemons. I was flabbergasted. My mind simply could not compute. Lemons don’t come from the yard!

Of course lemons DO come from the yard if you live where you can grow lemon trees, which I never have. In fact, it still feels strange to me to think of growing your own lemons, oranges, avocados, bananas, and all those other things that are “grocery store” foods in my mind.

If you are lucky enough to have lemon trees where you live, I guess you’re probably laughing at me as you read this. But in between chuckles, why don’t you go snag yourself a fresh lemon and squeeze a little into your drink and think of me?
