In the early 1940s, a church in Washington D.C. put on a Christmas in July event to collect donations of presents. Holding the drive in July gave them time to ship the donations to recipients in need around the world in time for the December holiday. Soon, the US Postal Service picked up on the Christmas in July trend, gathering gifts to send to troops stationed overseas.
