When President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation and encouraged Black Americans to join the Union Army, young William Carney answered the call. He had been born a slave, but learned to read and write in secret and had gained his freedom.

He joined the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and found himself at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. It was a nightmarish battle, and Carney saw many of his friends fall, but when the standard-bearer was hit, Carney rushed ahead to catch the flag and carry it on. He was shot at least twice, but kept the flag flying, and finally passed it off to a fellow soldier saying, “Boys, I only did my duty; the old flag never touched the ground!"

Carney survived the battle, and although it took 37 more years, he was eventually awarded with the Medal of Honor for his service in 1900.

This Flag Day is the perfect time to remember William Carney and those like him who sacrificed so much for their flag and country.
