As a certified cold weather hater, I have to remind myself that winter isn’t designed specifically to ruin my life, and that there are lots of truly delightful things about wintertime. 

I was reminded of this recently on a sweltering day when I dashed into the gas station for a cold drink and saw a mother with a minivan’s worth of kids in tow. Each child was allowed to choose a drink, and in between requests for sports drinks and soda, one kid confidently declared that they wanted a hot chocolate! I could have fainted at just the thought of a hot drink on a melty day like that, but as Emily Dickinson said: the heart wants what the heart wants. 

Thinking about that determined, sweaty kid with her hot chocolate reminded me that winter has its charms, and when I’m feeling down about being cold this winter, I can be grateful that the icy weather makes hot cocoa such a treat!
