Fools, are you ready to level up your AI skills? Today’s two-part prompt bridges the gap between knowing what a company does and knowing what matters as you near a buy decision.

I call it my “bring me up to date” tool, and it was expressly designed to draw out the often dramatic tension between a business and its stock market value. It assumes you know at least a little about the company, but what you learn here comes from a view of a business in motion.

The instruction at its heart is simple: Bring me up to date, starting with the now of the story and what got us here. Start in medias res — in the middle of things — the way Homer begins the Iliad, or the way the showrunners craft that very first scene of Breaking Bad. From there the prompt isolates the relevant trends and value drivers, hunting for the handful of factors that will shape the company's valuation over a five-year period and beyond.

Part 1 produces an appendix; Part 2 turns it into an interactive valuation artifact. Both are grounded in expectations investing: what does today’s price imply about the market’s expectations for this business?

Part 1 looks long, but the output is very readable. The prompt zeroes in on the small group of factors holding up the price the market has assigned today. Those are the same factors most likely to break, which is exactly why you want to see them before you buy the stock, not after.

After the output of part 1, you can paste in part 2 immediately in your chat interface, and have your LLM build the interactive valuation artifact. If you’ve never used a tool like this, don’t be afraid — jump in and play around. I promise you won’t break anything, and it may be the springboard for further learning.

You can also summon the interactive artifact later in the conversation by pasting it in when you’re ready. And, please note that some LLMs may require you to be logged in or hold a certain subscription to successfully render the interactive dashboard in prompt 2.

A note for advanced investors and users: I personally use data tools like MCP servers and APIs to ensure data integrity. You can modify this prompt to do the same. And of course, you can ask your LLM to build your own version of the slider to suit your own valuation models.
