While millions of people flock to cities across the United States for the FIFA World Cup, disturbing reports indicate ICE will be out in full, terrorizing force. The Trump administration’s welcome plan for millions of sports fans visiting the United States for the FIFA World Cup? ICE. Everywhere. According to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, ICE agents will be “out there every day” for the weeks-long tournament, which kicks off June 11.[1] While the rogue agency actively carries out unlawful arrests, racially profiles people, and inflicts violence upon our communities, the presence of ICE agents at games and fan festivals puts everyone — fans, players, players’ families, stadium employees, team staff — at unnecessary risk. Communities are already fighting back. Stadium workers in Los Angeles are threatening to strike over ICE’s presence. Activists in Philadelphia are organizing to stop it. Congress is taking notice, too. Rep. Nellie Pou introduced the Save the World Cup Act, which would bar federal law enforcement from conducting immigration enforcement raids at or near soccer matches and fan festivals — it’s legislation we need to rally behind today. When we push members of Congress to support legislation, speak out, and take action, it helps fuel support for the local organizing already happening in cities across the country. Will you send a message that ICE has NO place turning sporting events meant to bring us together into places full of division, fear, and violence? Tell your lawmakers: NO ICE at the World Cup! Pass the Save the World Cup Act. We’ve seen before how powerful people can be when they organize to keep ICE out of sporting events. Last year, in response to tireless pressure from local activists and fans alike, the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team stopped dozens of federal agents from entering its stadium premises. Together, we will ramp up the pressure on lawmakers to act before all eyes are on the U.S. this summer.
