The Pentagon budget negotiations just got a lot more interesting: Last week’s House Armed Services Committee’s (HASC) markup of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) exposed massive cracks in support for Trump’s proposed $1.5 trillion weapons and war budget. 12 members voted NO on passing the NDAA out of committee. More than double that voted for Rep. Seth Moulton’s amendment to cut $150 billion from the Pentagon topline. These numbers are simply unprecedented. Punchbowl News called it a “stunning level” of opposition.[1] Politico warned of “troubles ahead” for the must-pass bill.[2] While the bill made it out of committee, these votes were a departure from the status quo, showing an appetite across Capitol Hill to reject business as usual and block Trump’s war budget. With DC’s war hawks on the defensive, now is the moment to dig deeper and keep growing our coalition of lawmakers willing to stop an egregious $1.5 TRILLION budget for weapons and war. To do that, and as Senators begin their behind-closed-doors debate, we need to keep flooding offices: When Trump told the nation he “doesn’t think about Americans’ financial situation” as millions struggle to put food on the table, pay their bills, and cover historically high gas prices, Win Without War, Public Citizen, and MoveOn led 80 organizations to demand Congress reject the Pentagon budget and invest in what keeps people safe instead. When lawmakers took up the record-breaking request in Committee, we mobilized 30,000 people to send a resounding message that we, the people, reject Trump’s war budget. Taking on a Pentagon budget that’s backed by powerful hawks in Congress and a multimillion-dollar weapons lobby is no small feat. But as Trump wages an illegal, unjustified war on Iran, kills hundreds of people in boat strikes off the coast of South America, deploys troops to our own streets, and threatens more violence in Cuba, Mexico, and beyond, it’s work we must take on. Last week’s NDAA markup was anything but business as usual, and we intend to keep making the idea of sending more taxpayer dollars towards funding bombs and bloodshed politically toxic. You can help build a majority of lawmakers with the power to block Trump’s $1.5 trillion war budget today by writing your members of Congress. Thank you for working for peace,
