For the past year, MoveOn's political team and data scientists have been doing the hard work of figuring out why Democrats lost so badly in 2024. And the answer, when they looked closely at the data, was uncomfortable but clear: Trump didn't win because he attracted a bunch of new voters. He won because voters who usually vote Democratic—millions of them—didn't show up.
Some had lost faith that either party would actually improve their lives. Others were progressive voters who'd grown exhausted waiting for Democrats to fight like they meant it.
We're calling them "the skippers." And here's what the data shows: In 11 battleground congressional districts alone, the number of MoveOn members who sat out 2024 exceeds the margin Democrats need to win those races this year. That's not a theory. That's a mathematical reality.
So our 2026 election program is built around one central mission: re-engaging those voters, rebuilding their trust, and getting them back to the ballot box in November.

We're not trying to persuade Fox News viewers. We're focused on people who already share our values—people who've signed MoveOn petitions, made calls to Congress, and showed up to No Kings protests—but who, for reasons that make complete sense, didn't vote in 2024.
They know MoveOn. They've been a part of our organization. And right now, that matters more than any amount of TV advertising, because trust in media and institutions is at historic lows.
What we're offering them isn't empty promises. It's something real: candidates who are refusing corporate PAC money and running on an affordability agenda that actually speaks to their constituents' lives. Candidates like Brad Lander in New York, Cori Bush in Missouri, Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota, and Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan. We’re recruiting a small army of volunteers across the country, with plans to contact skippers 4 million times between now and November.
We're also planning more primary endorsements than in any previous election cycle in MoveOn's history. All told, we're operating in 66 congressional districts and seven Senate races—more than enough, if we do this right, to end MAGA control of Congress, put a real check on Trump, and start building back far stronger than we were.
None of this is cheap. But we've calculated what it takes, and we know the investment is worth it: $27 million to run the most targeted, member-powered election program we've ever built.
