Less than six months ago, unarmed Minneapolis mother Renee Nicole Good was brutally killed by ICE agent Jonathan Ross during “Operation Metro Surge.” The killing shocked the nation and showed the brutality of ICE. Now, months later, it's been reported that Jonathan Ross has not only not faced consequences, but he’s been quietly relocated to another state and is still working for ICE doing investigative work.1
This is not accountability. This is not justice. This sends a signal that ICE and other immigration agents are allowed to act with impunity—even kill people—and nothing will happen to them. Jonathan Ross should face legal charges, not get to move to another state and continue to collect a government check funded by taxpayers.

Operation Metro Surge was a part of Donald Trump’s plan to arrest and deport as many of our immigrant neighbors as possible. During the action, hundreds of citizens and lawfully present immigrants were rounded up, detained, and hauled in front of judges.2
ICE agents went on school property and made arrests at bus stops and other locations near schools while children were present, leading to a drop in attendance.3 Most notably, ICE detained 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and sent him to a detention center in Dilley, Texas.4
Hundreds of people signed up to be ICE observers and to document what was happening in their communities, only to be surveilled and intimidated by ICE agents who used license plate readers to gather observers' identities and addresses.5 And, in the case of Alex Pretti, killed by immigration agents from Customs and Border Patrol.6
You don’t get to kill someone at work then keep your job as if nothing happened. Jonathan Ross must be held accountable. Demand he be removed from duty now.
There are some lawmakers who are taking action. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has demanded assurances from Trump border czar Tom Homan that Ross is not operating in the state, saying, “I have no confidence that Ross can be trusted to safely interact with the public. Nor should you.”7
People should feel safe in their communities, and having someone who recorded himself shooting a woman three times as she sat defenseless in her car is not safe.8 Ross must be removed from duty before he causes any more harm.

At least 2,000 ICE agents and 1,000 Customs and Border Patrol agents were a part of Operation Metro Surge.9 Agents entered hospitals with detainees, sometimes without warrants.10 They detained more than a dozen MSP airport workers; entered the home of a U.S. citizen, detained him, and dragged him outside in the freezing cold in his underwear; and they frequently entered homes without judicial warrants.11, 12, 13
One week after Renee Good was killed, Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis was shot in the leg by an ICE agent while he was standing outside his home.14 Criminal charges were originally filed against Sosa-Celis and his cousin but were dropped due to ICE agents' making “false statements” under oath.15
During Operation Metro Surge, immigration agents were given free rein to do what they wanted and suffer zero consequences. When that happens, tragedies like what happened to Renee Good occur, and there is zero accountability when the FBI refuses to share resources with state officials and the FBI investigation “stalls."16
Jonathan Ross must answer for what he did. He must be held accountable, and that starts with removing him from duty and resuming any and all investigations into Renee Good’s killing. Renee deserves justice.
