Help families survive the devastation of war

I wanted to update you on the horrifying situation families are facing in Sudan.

People are dying every day - killed by the violence unleashed in the brutal conflict between government and militia - and by something equally devastating: the destruction of basic services meant to protect them.

Nearly 14 million people have been forced from their homes. They are exhausted, traumatised and increasingly cut off from food, water and medical care.

I’m Tom Roth, writing to you as the new executive director of Médecins Sans Frontières Australia. And I want to be clear about what we are seeing in Sudan.

Drone strikes are increasingly targeting Sudan’s civilian areas. Hospitals have been attacked, medical staff threatened or forced to flee, and ambulances blocked from reaching the wounded.

In 2025, MSF teams provided more than 250,000 emergency consultations and carried out over 4,200 consultations for sexual violence - very often used as a weapon of war - with women bearing the heaviest burden.

The relentless violence has not only brought Sudan’s healthcare system to breaking point; it is inflicting profound and far-reaching harm by systematically dismantling essential lifelines - such as food security and basic safety.

For children, the consequences are dire.

More than 15,000 children under five were admitted to MSF feeding programs with acute malnutrition last year - dramatically increasing their risk of death from treatable illnesses.

At the same time, outbreaks of measles and cholera are spreading rapidly.

These conditions are now claiming the lives of the most vulnerable - women and children.

Despite this, the global response is failing. Funding is falling short and access is constrained.
