What an unusually complex month it has been, with so many different emergencies unfolding around the world from the earthquakes in Venezuela to the ongoing Ebola disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. And all the while, the Middle East conflict has continued with ceasefires either being called off in Iran, or ignored in Palestine and Lebanon, where thousands of people continue to die and be displaced.

Of course, we can’t forget the people of Ukraine, who are also still suffering and somehow living amongst the daily threat of violence as Russia’s invasion rumbles on well into its fourth year. We have released a new report this month highlighting that for Ukrainians right now, there is ‘No Safe Place to Heal’ as their country, and crucially their medical facilities – including those run by MSF – continue to come under fire, despite being protected by international law.

Afghanistan is another context in which a health system under serious strain is taking its toll on the people, with our teams witnessing an alarming rise in child malnutrition in the country’s south. This concerning trend highlights how a complex combination of environmental and societal factors can quickly impact an entire community, sadly with children often being the most vulnerable.

But despite all of this suffering, there was some joy to be found in our work this month. As millions of people came together to enjoy ‘the beautiful game’ – aka football - we also couldn’t resist football fever and ran a very special match of our own in Chalco, Mexico. There, local children played under the jerseys of some of the countries where MSF works to learn about the suffering occurring elsewhere in the world, but also to highlight that sport can be a great unifier, bringing together people from all different backgrounds.

I hope these stories from our patients and staff all over the world bring you a greater understanding of our work, and highlight how important your support is for so many people who rely on all of us to care about them and bear witness to their experience.
