Shorai balances the subtlety of traditional hand-drawn brushstrokes with clean, geometric outlines. An intellectual-looking sans serif, Shorai’s simplified letterforms and vast weight ranges provide creatives with a holistic branding solution.

Shorai Sans was designed as a companion typeface to Avenir® Next, built to work harmoniously in modern global designs, while preserving the essence of Japanese handwriting. Shorai goes beyond existing Japanese sans serifs to provide a wide spectrum of expression and personality for designers to play with. Shorai Sans is opening new horizons in Japanese typography.

A new era of legibility in Japanese type.
Almost all conventional Japanese sans serifs have visible stroke beginnings and endings, even in the heaviest weights. In contrast, most stroke endings of Shorai are blended into adjacent strokes to achieve uncomplicated outer forms as well as smooth inner forms. The static Shorai font family has ten weights from Ultra Light to Heavy. The Heavy weight is one of the heaviest currently known in Japanese sans serif families.

Mr. Nakamura advised when creating hiragana, he was impressed with how strokes were simplified by Akira and Ryota. He discovered this approach because Akira had great experience in creating Latin typefaces. He was able to take the techniques present in Latin typefaces and empower them in the Japanese typeface.
