Greetings, Friends!
I've never been particularly interested in quick fixes. That said, I've certainly been guilty of chasing instant gratification.
As I've gotten older 👴, I've found myself thinking more about the future ⏳—even though that distance seems to narrow a little more every year.
That's true for all of us, but I'm noticing it more as the decades pass and fewer remain ahead than behind. I'm pretty sure I want the same thing you do: not just to live longer, but to live stronger. 💪
At first, staying strong meant keeping up with my friends. Then it became about keeping up with my kids. Today, it means being alive, healthy ❤️, and able to keep pace with the older version of my grandson 👶 who was recently born.
There's that idea of the long view again. But lately I've been thinking about something else as well: the quality view. It's one thing to live a long life. It's another to have the strength, energy, mobility, and curiosity to enjoy it.
I've come to believe there's only one reliable path to both: consistent habits. 🌱 A little of this and a little of that doesn't seem to cut it anymore. The greatest challenge I face isn't knowledge. It's consistency. Pulling myself up by the bootstraps, as my dad used to say, and getting the job done. My father was inherently disciplined. 🎯 Old school. Work hard, play hard. I embraced the "play hard" part pretty quickly. The discipline part took longer.
Thankfully, we now know that our brains can change. 🧠 Through neuroplasticity, we can build new habits and strengthen old ones. The difficult part is usually the beginning. I think of intermittent fasting. The first day of a 16- to 20-hour fast is always the hardest for me. The second day is easier. By the third day, it feels almost automatic. Then somewhere along the way I break the habit and find myself starting over. Not because I want to. Usually because I get lazy. The same thing happens with exercise 🚶♂️, stretching, meditation 🧘♂️, and plenty of other healthy routines.
In fact, I've started to think that habits are less about perfection and more about remembering. I can't think of a single positive habit I've never broken. The key isn't avoiding failure. The key is noticing when I've drifted away, remembering why the habit mattered in the first place, and getting back to it. That only happens when the goal is important enough, which is why I'm fairly selective about the habits I choose to pursue.
Every so often I'll sit quietly and take inventory of my life. I look at what's working, what isn't, and where a small change might make a meaningful difference. I try not to judge. I simply observe. Almost always, one useful insight emerges. My mind can be busy. If I don't slow down occasionally, I lose sight of the long view—and the quality view.
So I'll leave you with a question:
Is there anything you could do—or stop doing—that might help you move closer to your goal of living longer and stronger? ❤️
Sometimes the smallest habit can make the biggest difference. 🌱
