The Weekly Eye-Opener
Introducing our New Weekly Series by our Lead Optometrist, Dhruvin Patel

Your Child Will Not Tell You Their Eyes Hurt. Here is Why.

They are not hiding it.

They genuinely do not know.

A child who has always had tired, blurry, or sore eyes has nothing to compare it to. That is just what seeing feels like to them. So they do not say anything. They sit closer to the TV. They rub their eyes after reading. They get headaches you put down to a long day.

August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. School is starting again. And most parents will pack the bag, buy the shoes, and completely forget about the one thing that affects everything else their child does at school.

Their eyes.

What the research has measured

Nearly 1 in 2 children go unscreened every year. Vision problems are routinely mistaken for learning difficulties, attention issues, or just being slow to read.

(Prevent Blindness / National Survey of Children's Health)

Every extra hour of daily screen time increases a child's risk of myopia by 21%. The average 8 to 10 year old already spends six hours a day on screens, and that goes up during the school year.

(JAMA Network Open, 2025)

Dry eye in children has more than doubled since the pandemic. Most children never mention it because they think it is normal to have sore, tired eyes.

(Venugopal and Bhaskar, 2025)

💡 This is the core research insight

Children adapt. That is the problem.

Instead of telling you something is wrong, they quietly find ways to cope. They move closer to the screen. They tilt their head. They avoid reading because it gives them a headache they cannot explain.

By the time the signs become obvious, months or even years of learning have already been affected.

The good news is that catching it early changes everything. And August, right before school starts, is the best time to do it.

The bigger picture

Prevent Blindness has been fighting for children's vision since 1908. This August they are pushing harder than ever because the problem is getting bigger, more screens, younger users, longer hours every year.

The back-to-school moment is not just about stationery and school shoes. It is one of the most important health checks you will make all year. And unlike most health checks, this one can be done in a lunch break.

Eye tip of the week:

Tonight ask your child one question: do your eyes ever hurt after school?

Most will say yes. Then they will say they thought that was normal.

It is not.

Sore, tired eyes at the end of a school day are a sign worth taking seriously, especially before a new term starts. Put the filter on their device. Do both this week. They will not ask you to. That is exactly why you should.
