Some places in Mexico do not feel real at first.
Clear blue water inside caves, sunlight cutting through openings above, and jungle hanging over underground pools. These are cenotes, natural swimming spots hidden beneath the Yucatán Peninsula, and they feel very different in person than what you see on Instagram.

What exactly is a cenote? |
Cenotes are natural sinkholes connected to underground river systems beneath the Yucatán Peninsula. Some are fully open and bright like lagoons, while others sit deep inside caves with only small beams of light reaching the water.
Swimming there feels different from a normal beach or pool experience. The water is colder than most people expect, fish often swim right beside you, and cave cenotes can feel surprisingly atmospheric and intense for a first visit. Open cenotes are usually the easiest and most comfortable option if you have never been there before.

Where to find them and how to get there |
 |
Most travelers fly into Cancún, which gives easy access to cenote areas around Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Valladolid. Flights from cities like New York or Los Angeles often start around $300 to $500 round trip depending on season and timing, with many nonstop options available.
Once there, renting a car gives you the most flexibility, especially if you want to visit several cenotes in one day. Tours are easier if you prefer not to plan transport yourself.
Some of the best-known cenotes include:
Cenote Azul for an easy first visit
Gran Cenote and Cenote Ik Kil for scenery
Cenote Dos Ojos for a more cave-like experience
Going early makes a huge difference. The light is softer, the water feels calmer, and the crowds are much smaller.
|
|
What it costs and what to bring |
Many cenotes are surprisingly affordable. Entrance fees are often around $10 to $15, while guided tours with transport usually range from $35 to $100, depending on what is included.
For the best experience, bring:
Swimsuit and towel
Cash
Water shoes
Biodegradable sunscreen

Final thoughts |
 |
Cenotes can either feel like a quick tourist stop or one of the most memorable parts of a Mexico trip. A lot depends on choosing the right type, arriving early, and giving yourself time to actually enjoy the atmosphere instead of rushing through it.
If Mexico is already on your list, Ovago can help you compare flights, track better fares, and plan the trip more easily from the start.
