Last month, we got our 7th Prime minister since 2016. This may feel hopeful for some, and tiresome for others. But while we get wrapped up in the political drama, it’s important to keep in mind what has stayed the same.
In a summer of record-breaking heat, the realities of the climate crisis are becoming ever harder to ignore. With millions of us impacted by hosepipe bans, the very real strain to our water systems is at the front of many minds.
This month, world water week is calling for us to work together towards a more water secure future for everyone amidst climate threats. Read on to discover how, through your continued support, Oxfam and partners are working towards this aim.

Building innovative water systems in Kenya |

In Turkana County, Kenya, increasingly unpredictable rainfall has led to frequent droughts, flooding, and crop failures. Boreholes are often the only source of water and, when they fail, women and girls carry the greatest burden.
In collaboration with local communities, Oxfam partnered with Davis & Shirtliff to rehabilitate boreholes across Turkana ahead of the dry season and rising drought and flood risks. The programme included the installation of solar-powered pumping systems, water quality testing, and engagement with local people to develop sustainable maintenance systems.
The project successfully rehabilitated and supported six water projects across the county, reaching 4,500 people. By acting before disaster could hit, the worst impacts to the community were prevented.
"Livestock were dying because the water was so far away from our homes. People were also getting sick because there was no clean water...But those problems especially during the dry seasons have reduced" - Monti, resident in Namawor.

New solutions for flood-affected communities in Bangladesh |

In the wetland communities of north-east Bangladesh, seasonal flooding can cut families off from safe water and sanitation for months. But new innovative solutions are changing that.
Through our partner Efforts for Rural Advancement, we are supporting families to stay safe during severe floods. Traditional bamboo toilets are often washed away by floods, increasing the risk of disease. Built together with communities in a world-first design, floating toilets use drum barrels that rise with flood waters and are connected by a stable gangway.
“Now if there is flooding, the bathroom won't sink, this is good... Even when there is stormy rain, we can use [the] toilets properly,” says Shantona. |

Words are easy, but we need action to fix the economy, show global leadership, strengthen local decision-making, tackle the climate crisis, and end the politics of division. We demand strong leadership for a fairer and more just world.

If you’ve bought any products showing a Waitrose Foundation logo, then you’ve helped raise funds for growers to improve their livelihoods.
The logo means a portion of the sale is reinvested back into the growing communities. Oxfam is working with farms in Senegal and The Gambia that supply vegetables such as green beans and sweetcorn to support worker-led community projects.

Turning gifts into global impact |

Surdhani is a teacher and community leader within the Munda indigenous community in Southwestern Bangladesh. The Munda people have long faced discrimination and limited opportunities, and the community is now facing the harsh impacts of climate breakdown.
Today, she leads a women’s collective supported by Oxfam partner Breaking the Silence, which helps women save money, build skills, and speak up for their rights. Her leadership is encouraging more women to step forward and shape a future where their voices are heard.
