Strength through community in Kenya |

Oxfam, in partnership with Pastoralists Girls Initiative (PGI), is supporting women in Garissa County, Kenya, to establish small businesses. Garissa has an arid climate, and faces extreme droughts and flooding. To strengthen livelihoods and food security amid recurring climate shocks, PGI is supporting community groups with cash grants, letting the community decide how best to invest the funds.
Nasra is the chairlady of the Development Girls Group, a tailoring shop making custom-made tie-dyed dresses. This group was founded after receiving training and a cash grant from PGI. Before this project, most of the group’s members had no income, no savings and no training. Today, that reality is changing.
“A group is stronger than individuals working by themselves,” says Nasra.

At a time when pessimism, constant doom-scrolling, and negative headlines can dominate our attention, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by bad news. Yet, every day, countless positive things are happening.
Phil, shop manager since 1999, has helped turn Oxfam Swansea into a true community hub. The shop offers a welcoming space for refugees and asylum seekers and received Shop of Sanctuary status in 2014. The shop also hosts a range of activities, including a volunteer-run quiz night and in-house knitting projects raising funds for Gaza.
This is a perfect example of the amazing work that can be accomplished when we work together, committed to fostering connection – and not division – within our communities.

You may have seen our 'Stay in the Fight' ad on TV recently; reminding us all that, nearly 80 years on, Oxfam is still in the fight for a fairer future. Writing a Will is one of the most meaningful things you can do for the people and causes you love, and with Will writing services provided by Oxfam, you can do it completely free of charge, and in a way that suits your needs best.
From 11–25 May, it's Free Wills Fortnight, where you can pick up a postcard from our Books & Music shops to find out more about this service. You can also search Oxfam Legacy online, or click the link below to get started. |
