Hey Milled,
If you asked us to put together a list of must-know Italian wines from outside Tuscany and Piedmont, these would be at the top of the list. They come from Abruzzo, where Cristiana Tiberio took over her family winery after working at Jacques Selosse, Nicolas Joly, and Egon Muller. For the last decade, both her whites and reds have helped redefine the region, and have become increasingly allocated in the process.
Tiberio’s new release just arrived. Let us know if you have any questions.
In the hills of Abruzzo, Cristiana farms the local Trebbiano Abruzzese grape to make a fresh, bright, citrusy summer white that’s an ideal alternative to Chablis.
Year after year, the salty, electric, richly textured Fonte Canale is one of our favorite white wines in all of Italy.
2023 marks the first-ever vintage of this white wine. It’s made from a single plot of pecorino, which grows at high-altitude just inland from the Adriatic. Midweight and intensely mineral - only 1500 bottles were produced in total.
Made entirely from montepulciano, this rosé is darker and earthier than rosé from Provence, but still floral and fresh enough for summertime.
The name ‘Archivio’ refers to the archive of four, rare montepulciano clones that Cristiana farms on a single high-elevation vineyard in Abruzzo. The resulting red is rich and smoky, but with more freshness and floral lift than you almost ever find from this grape.
This spice-laden, complex red is right there with Emidio Pepe and Valentini for best expression of montepulciano in Abruzzo, or for that matter, anywhere else.
Enjoy,
Grant
