Patriot,
Today is Flag Day.
Most people will not notice. A few will throw up a flag emoji. Some towns will run a small ceremony nobody under forty attends. And that will be that.
Here is what I have come to believe about the flag, and it is not what you would expect from a guy who built a company around it.
The flag does not need your salute.
It does not need a bumper sticker. It does not need a profile picture once a year. It does not need you to get loud in a comment section about people who disrespect it. The flag has survived a lot worse than indifference. It will be just fine without your performance.
What the flag is actually asking is a harder question. It is asking whether you are worth it.
Think about what that piece of cloth is supposed to stand for. Self governance. The idea that ordinary men could run their own lives without a king telling them how. Responsibility. The notion that freedom and duty are the same coin, and you do not get one without carrying the other.
Now hold your own week up against that.
Did you govern yourself, or did your phone and your habits govern you? Did you carry your responsibilities, or did you let them slide and blame the heat, the schedule, the season? Were you free, or were you just comfortable?
That is the gap Flag Day exists to expose. Not the gap between America and her enemies. The gap between the standard that flag represents and the way most of us actually live under it.
You do not honor the flag by saluting it. You honor it by becoming someone worth its protection.
That means the small stuff nobody claps for. Showing up for your kids when you would rather check out. Keeping your word when breaking it would be easier. Holding the line in your own house when no one is watching. Being the kind of man that, if the whole country were made of him, the flag would have nothing to worry about.
That is the work. It is quiet, it is daily, and it never trends.
So this Saturday, fly the flag if you have one. But do not stop there. Go be the proof that it stands for something. The cloth is just cloth. You are the part that has to mean it.
