Hey Shockers,
Happy Wednesday! We hope you're having a great week.
Like many people around the world, you've likely been hearing nonstop coverage of the latest on COVID-19, and it's status globally.
Depending on who you listen to, COVID-19 is less worrisome than flu or could legitimately soon become a worldwide pandemic. While we won't pretend to be able to predict the future, taking some basic precautions could ultimately be a smart bet -- no, you don't need to invest in an end of the world bunker or another doomsday kit.
In addition to health experts recommending through hand washing and other basic hygiene best practices (keep handshaking to a minimum), many experts are also suggesting to reduce the number of times you touch your face throughout the day.
In theory, it may sound easy to avoid touching your face; that is, until you realize how often the average person does.
Worst of all, many of us don't even realize we're touching our faces so frequently. Even if you KNOW something is bad for you, it's easy to still do it on autopilot.
According to various estimates, we touch our face several hundred, if not more times a day. That's a lot of germs going from your hands to your face.
Not only is touching your face bad for spreading germs, picking or playing with acne or other blemishes on your face further spreads germs and leads to breakouts and more.
The key to changing any habit is learning to become aware of when you are performing a behavior. Many times smokers don't even realize when they begin to crave a cigarette. Some people pick their hair when they are on the phone or watching a movie.
Without awareness, it's virtually impossible to change your behavior; this is especially true as something as automatic as touching your face.
If you're concerned about how often you touch your face, take steps to become aware of each time you do so. When you catch yourself, notice that you did so.
You won't be able to reduce your face touching overnight, but by becoming more aware of the behavior, you can reduce the number of times you touch your face and spread germs from your hands.
Whether you're trying to reduce your acne, or just want to build better habits, commit to becoming aware of the times you engage in those unwanted behaviors.
Spending even just a small part of your day becoming aware of your habitual behaviors can have huge dividends in changing your habits for good. You'd be surprised at how often do things you never knew you even did!
Awareness of your bad habit is always step #1.
Have a great rest of your week.
