Reform, or catastrophe?

There's an old rule of thumb I've been thinking about lately:

If something can't go on forever, it will stop.

Our politics cannot keep working the way it works today. An economy where more and more people feel like they're falling behind even when they're working hard. A political system where money too often speaks louder than voters. Congressional districts shaped to protect politicians instead of empowering citizens. Markets dominated by a handful of ever-growing companies while farmers, workers, consumers, and small businesses are left with fewer choices and less power.

Something that can't go on forever won't.

The question is not whether things will change. The question is how.

For us as Americans, the answer is either reform or catastrophe.

I believe we are prepared to choose reform. I believe we can build something better before we're forced by the current status quo into disasters beyond recovery. 

But reform requires effort. It never arises on its own. It happens when enough people decide that the future will be different from the present and then do the work to make it so.

In my travels to communities across the country, I have been highlighting the need for reform, having conversations directly with people about what’s on the line, and uplifting leaders who understand that our task is not to put everything back exactly the way it was. It's to build a politics and an economy that work better for more people.
