| Friend,
I just wanted to say thank you for the outpouring of support and kindness so many of you have shown to our family since I spoke out about what happened to us last week.
This incident was one of the darkest times in my life, and our family is working to move past it. In the days since, Chasten and I have been focused on getting back to normal: spending time together, reading a few more bedtime stories, making sure our kids feel safe and loved.
In a painful moment, one bright spot has been hearing from so many of you – friends and family from near and far, and leaders across the political spectrum – people I've served with, and in some cases even people I've competed or campaigned against. It meant a lot to hear from so many of you.
Whatever the politics of the moment, I believe most Americans still respect a fundamental boundary: you leave people’s kids alone. It's basic decency, and the response and support we’ve received over the last week shows me there’s a hunger for a better kind politics that reflects that.
As we head into the holiday weekend, and celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, it's worth remembering that America has always been at its best when we find our way past fear and division, toward a politics that brings out the best in all of us. I'm looking forward to getting back out there and doing more of that in the weeks and months ahead.
We’re also looking forward to some quality time with family and friends this holiday weekend, and I hope that you are too.
Thank you, again, for your encouragement, your prayers, and your support. It has meant more to our family than we can express.
Pete
