Virtual reality continues to evolve rapidly, pushing the boundaries of resolution, field of view, and visual quality. Pimax’s Crystal Super series stands at the forefront of this innovation, offering multiple optical engine options tailored to different user priorities. Whether you value razor-sharp clarity, immersive wide-angle views, or the deepest blacks and contrast, the Crystal Super family has an option for you.

In this email, we’ll explore the differences between each optical engine variant, break down key specs like PPD (Pixels Per Degree), FOV (Field of View), and stereo overlap, and explain how the choice of display technology—QLED versus Micro-OLED—affects your VR experience. We’ll also detail the exclusive benefits available to current pre-order customers.

PPD vs. FOV: What Matters Most?

Pixels Per Degree (PPD) measures the visual sharpness within each degree of your field of view. Higher PPD delivers crystal-clear text, finer details, and avoids the distracting screen-door effect. This is especially valuable for simulation enthusiasts, productivity applications, and any VR scenario where fine visual clarity is essential.

Field of View (FOV) describes how much of the virtual environment you can see at once. A wider FOV provides a panoramic, natural vision, increasing your sense of presence and spatial awareness.

Choosing between PPD and FOV depends on your use case:
  • High PPD favors cockpit sims, reading, and detailed work.
  • Wide FOV benefits fast-paced games, exploration, and immersive worlds.
The Crystal Super series uniquely balances both, with options allowing you to prioritize according to your needs.

FOV vs. Stereo Overlap: The Depth of Immersion

Stereo overlap is the portion of the visual field seen by both eyes simultaneously, crucial for accurate depth perception and visual comfort.
  • Wide FOV with low stereo overlap can create tunnel vision effects and reduce realistic depth cues in peripheral vision.
  • High stereo overlap improves depth perception and reduces eye strain, but often comes with a trade-off in total FOV.
The Crystal Super uses large QLED panels and aspheric glass lenses to deliver a large FOV and sufficient stereo overlap, while you can choose the balance between FOV and stereo overlap according to your needs. Some people are very sensitive to stereo overlap and want it to be around 100°, while others don't see much difference between 80° and 100° but can benefit largely from a wide FOV.

QLED vs. Micro-OLED: Choosing Your Display Technology

The Crystal Super offers both QLED and Micro-OLED display options, each with distinct characteristics:
  • QLED displays provide high brightness and a wide color gamut, ideal for well-lit environments and high-contrast scenes. Additionally, Crystal Super's upgraded local dimming with 1000 zones per eye delivers decent blacks in dark scenes.
  • Micro-OLED offers superior black levels and contrast with near-instant response times, delivering exceptional image crispness and depth, especially in darker scenes.
Micro-OLED models are lighter and more compact, making them excellent for users valuing comfort and contrast.
