The Repotting Mistake Most Plant Parents Make

We love that plant parents are repotting more. But there’s one mistake we see over and over, going up in pot size without thinking about the soil!

Here’s what usually happens: your plant gets rootbound, you upgrade to a much larger pot, grab whatever mix is on hand, and expect a growth spurt. Instead, it stalls, droops, or slides into root rot.

REPOTTING 101

The problem? Too much wet soil, not enough roots, and often the wrong mix.

Here’s the right way to repot:

Choose a pot ONLY 1–2 inches wider than the current one.
Gently loosen the roots and remove as much of the old nursery soil as you can.
Use fresh soil that matches your plant type (houseplant mix for most indoor plants, cactus & succulent mix for desert plants, aroid for tropicals).
Make sure your pot has a drainage hole — decorative pots without one should be used as cache pots.
Expect 2–4 weeks of adjustment while the plant rebuilds its root system.

Here’s the non-negotiable: if your soil doesn’t match your plant type, you’re basically inviting root rot. Heavy mix + desert plant? Too soggy. Super fast-draining mix + thirsty tropical? Constantly stressed.

When you give your plant optimized drainage for its specific needs, roots get the sweet spot of air, water, and nutrients they need to actually grow instead of just surviving.
