Race day is here. The Off the Charts team is starting to set strategies to make it to the end of the race. Hopefully with a fresh personal best in tow!

How training went

“My biggest obstacle in the marathon will be the feeling of discomfort,” says Kanerva Arola who has been tackling several injuries of late.

To reach her goals, Kanerva has been using the Polar Vantage V3 Watch and the Verity Sense optical heart rate sensor. Worn on the arm or temple, Verity Sense allows maximum freedom of movement and multiple options for viewing and recording workouts.

“Data-wise, I am especially interested in following my sleep scores,” Kanerva says.

Other things to monitor include heart rate and staying within pre-determined zones while training. “During my last easy run, I noticed my body was not feeling great as I had a hard time keeping my heart rate down. Luckily I recovered during the following tempo runs and my heart rate stayed nicely within Zone 3, even though I held my pace at 5:00.”

Keeping it calm

For Alina Huldén, fueling and hydration has gone super smoothly in the weeks leading to the marathon. She is also using the Polar Vantage V3 with the Verity Sense monitor on the arm. “I have really enjoyed the feel of the Verity Sense. I have previously trained with tight chest straps but the experience with the arm attachment has done wonders for my breathing!”

Alina is aiming for a race that is, above all, calm, fun and slower in pace. “During the race, I'm happy going a bit slower and taking it more easy than the data would want me to. This marathon is not for pushing my limits but rather for making it to end in one piece.”

Running hard on empty legs

On the contrary, fellow runner Jussi Hildén is afraid of going too hard. With a negative split strategy, Jussi is aiming for a 1:26 first half, and then accelerating towards a sub 1:24 second half.

“My biggest challenge in the race will be my legs. I hope they hold up! I know the fitness is there, but I am very good at ‘emptying my legs’, meaning that I tend to run too hard too soon in longer races ,” he says.

“I am happy with the overall training I have managed to do leading to the marathon but am a bit worried about my goal. Is it too ambitious?”

As the race draws closer, so do the nerves.

“Should I have done more?”

Kanerva adds laughing: “I am also fully prepared to pop an imodium before the race because my stomach will probably be a bit in shock.”
