Week 3 Waiver Wire Targets: Two Rookies Emerge As Priority Adds

Week 2 is nearly in the books, and the waiver wire opened up in some notable ways over the weekend. Here are the names I'd be targeting before your claim deadline.

Denzel Boston is my top wide receiver add this week and one of the more interesting rookie situations we've seen in a while. He's playing as Cleveland's clear WR1, running routes on 86% of the Browns' passing plays and drawing targets at a 19.6% rate per route run. Only nine other receivers in the league can match both of those thresholds. He caught five passes for 95 yards and a touchdown in Week 2, which puts him in the top 12 at wide receiver on the season. He's a second-round pick who has already taken over his team's offense and he's still available in more than 70% of leagues. That window is closing.

On the running back side, the Denver backfield shifted significantly in Week 2. J.K. Dobbins suffered a hamstring injury in the third quarter and missed the fourth quarter entirely, and Jonah Coleman stepped into the lead early-down role right away. RJ Harvey was already inactive with his own hamstring issue, so Coleman was essentially running the show down the stretch. Even when those two return, Coleman has done enough to earn a real role in this offense going forward. He's available in 78% of ESPN leagues.

Week 2 Usage & Production Report: Top 10 Takeaways

TreVeyon Henderson led the Patriots in rushing production with 16 carries for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Henderson missed Week 1 with an ankle injury, but was a full participant in practice all week and was ready to play in this game. In his absence, Rhamondre Stevenson played 84.5% of snaps last week, including 100% on third downs, in the two-minute drill, in short yardage and at the goal line. Corey Kiner was the primary backup, and Lan Larison was a practice squad call-up. This week, Larison remained on the practice squad.

Stevenson took all four snaps on the first drive, but ended up losing a fumble on a reception. This led Henderson to play 21 of 25 snaps over the next five drives while Stevenson played six. The split was a little more balanced in the following four series, with Henderson taking 12 snaps to nine by Stevenson. On the final drive, Kiner played four snaps to one by Stevenson.

The fumble likely impacted both backs' playing time; if the plan was to have Henderson as the lead back, he likely would have played on the first drive. However, it’s also possible that Henderson played well enough to take a lead going forward. Stevenson remained the primary third-down back throughout the game, so the only thing we can be decently confident in heading into next week is that Stevenson will likely remain the third-down option. Barring strong comments from the coaching staff one way or another, starting either back next week will be a bit of a gamble.

Week 2 Recap: Immediate Fantasy Takeaways from Sunday's Games

Darren Waller scored two touchdowns in Week 2 and his route participation jumped from 39.5% to 56.4% as the Panthers expanded his role across multiple personnel packages. The biggest shift came in 13 personnel, where Carolina went from three plays to 11 and had Waller on the field for 10 of them. He also played a third of 11 personnel snaps on early downs, up from just 19% in Week 1. He still needs either a higher target rate or a higher snap clip to trust in a starting lineup, but the trajectory makes him one of the more interesting waiver wire adds at tight end right now.
