A study published in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology (Choi, Lee, Longo - 2017) examined the relationship between periodic fasting, nutrition and autoimmune diseases, drawing on evidence from preclinical models and preliminary clinical studies.

On the immune system and inflammation:

The type and quantity of nutrients appear to influence the behaviour of immune cells
In the models studied, caloric restriction and fasting were associated with a slowing of certain processes linked to immune system ageing
Fasting Mimicking Program cycles showed effects associated with a reduction in certain inflammatory markers

On cellular regeneration:

In animal models of multiple sclerosis, FMP cycles showed signs of reduced autoimmune response and regeneration of myelin, the sheath that protects nerve fibres
In preliminary clinical studies involving people with multiple sclerosis, the Fasting Mimicking Program was found to be safe and associated with possible benefits on certain clinical parameters and quality of life
Not all forms of fasting appear to produce the same effects: nutritional composition may also play an important role

Why this matters

This study helps to better understand the relationship between nutrition and the immune system: Fasting Mimicking Program cycles appear to influence certain mechanisms of the immune response and to be associated with a reduction in certain inflammatory markers.

An interesting finding: in the models studied, the Fasting Mimicking Program showed different effects compared to water-only fasting, suggesting a possible role for its specific nutritional composition.
