Dear Fellow Striver,
Sixteen years in. The law is finally catching up.
For over 16 years, we've fought for a cleaner, more transparent supplement industry. On March 18, I signed in support of California Bill SB 1033, a common sense push for required heavy metal testing and public disclosure on protein products.
On May 4 it passed after being on the agenda for the Senate Appropriations Committee, and as of the hearing on May 14, it’s now held in committee and under submission.
California legislation has a way of setting the bar for the rest of the US, and even the rest of the world. Consumers everywhere deserve to know what’s in their protein.
If SB 1033 passes, it will mark a major milestone in the push for data-driven consumer transparency. What began as a dream in 2009 has become an ongoing commitment, and we will continue doing our part to improve consumer safety and transparency in the supplement industry.
SB 1033 will mean mandatory testing for the four known heavy metals: lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury and will help clean up the entire protein category. Peace of mind shouldn't be a luxury. It should be part of your health routine.

What's Actually In Your Protein Powder (And Why It Matters)
|
|
I sat down with Thomas DeLauer, health educator with over 4M YouTube subscribers, to walk through what batch testing actually looks like, why heavy metals show up in protein, and why the SB 1033 framework is overdue. We also got into how consumers can read a label without being deceived by it.

|
“I get that the industry sometimes feels there's a lot of focus on supplements and it's hard to live up to these, but I think that's good because we want to get to a point where the consumers are getting a higher quality product.”

CLP Insights: 2024 - 25 Protein Powder Category Report
|
|
The Clean Label Project®® ran 35,862 individual contaminant tests across 160 products from 70 of the top-selling protein brands - 83% of the U.S. market. The findings are the empirical case for SB 1033:
- 47% of products exceeded a federal or state safety threshold for heavy metals.
- 21% exceeded California Prop 65 limits for lead by more than 2×.
- Organic protein powders contained, on average, 3x more lead than non-organic - 79% over Prop 65, 41% at more than 2× the limit.
- Plant-based powders: 77% over Prop 65 for lead. Chocolate flavors: 65%, with 110× more cadmium than vanilla.

And then this line, taken directly from the report:
“Currently only one protein company, Puori, is certified to Clean Label Project Transparency Certification.”

That’s the proof point for the SB 1033 bill and Puori can be the example that the requirements can be met. We’ve been doing it since 2018. The infrastructure is hard, but it works. The question is no longer whether transparency is possible, it’s whether the rest of the industry will be required to catch up.

Before you take your next supplement
|
|
Ask yourself these 4 questions:
Purpose (why am I taking this?) Purity (is it clean?) Potency (is the dose right and enough?) Personal Experience (is it working?)
If SB 1033 passes, Purity becomes the law we have been fighting for and our QR code on every batch already helps you answer the Potency. The other two questions - only you can answer those.
