Cone Denim literally filed the patents for denim production in 1905 from that White Oak building. Other cultures would consider a structure with that kind of history a cultural treasure, but that’s not the way it went down. The plant was sold, its buildings gutted, and it has been a WalMart trucking distribution center ever since.
A few of us started talking and dreaming of ways to celebrate the plant’s history, its people, its stories and its impact on Greensboro, America and the rest of the world. A nonprofit called the White Oak Legacy Foundation (WOLF) was formed, and I’m one of the founding board members. The goals of the Foundation are to build a museum, promote education — and to once again make selvage denim fabric in the White Oak building.
