Rapha marked its launch, in 2004, with the Kings of Pain exhibition, a selection of photography and memorabilia celebrating the careers of six iconic riders. A decade on, the new Rapha Kings of Pain collection features limited edition apparel and accessories that pay tribute once again to these heroic figures. Each product in the collection is decorated with a series of specially commissioned ‘hallmarks’, exclusive graphics that capture the defining elements of the real Kings of Pain.
Based on Rapha’s Classic Jersey, the Kings of Pain jersey uses tone-on-tone embroidery and detailing for an understated aesthetic. The jersey is decorated with the special edition Kings of Pain hallmarks, Rapha’s ‘ex duris gloria’ motto, and cross-tyre panelling that recalls the days before neutral service and team cars.
When Rapha founder Simon Mottram set about compiling his original business plan, he soon realised he needed a way of explaining cycling’s enduring appeal. The result was Graeme Fife’s essay, Glory Through Suffering, republished today.
“The greatest battle is not physical but psychological. The demons telling us to give up when we push ourselves to the limit can never be silenced for good. They must always be answered by the quiet steady dignity that simply refuses to give in.”
Marianne Vos is one of the most decorated cyclists history with a palmarès encompassing World Championships in a variety of disciplines, Olympic medals, and Monuments. Here she talks to us about her nomination for the title Queen of Pain, Alfonsina Strada, and her ideas for the growth of women’s cycling.
