Waterproofs just not working like they used to?
It's probably time for a wash and reproof...
Waterproof jackets and outdoor clothing rely on two key features to keep you dry: a waterproof membrane that blocks rain while allowing sweat to escape, and a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating that makes water bead and roll off the outer fabric. Over time, dirt, sweat, oils, and regular wear can reduce the effectiveness of the DWR, causing the fabric to “wet out” and feel damp or less breathable, even if the waterproof membrane itself is still working properly.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is washing waterproof gear with standard detergent. Household detergents and fabric softeners can leave behind residues that damage water repellency and reduce breathability. Specialist cleaners such as Nikwax Tech Wash are designed specifically for technical outdoor clothing, helping remove dirt and restore performance without harming the fabric.
