Right now, some of the world's best ultrarunners are lining up in Death Valley for Badwater 135, the race that runs 135 miles, non-stop, from the floor of Death Valley to the gates of Mt. Whitney.
It starts at Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level, then climbs to Whitney Portal at 8,360 feet. Three mountain ranges. 14,600 feet of climbing. Temperatures that flirt with 120 degrees. The race director likes to point out that seven times more people have stood on top of Everest than have finished this one.
It's brutal. It's iconic. And it absolutely deserves an ID worthy of the occasion.
