Blue Fluted Plain was created in 1775 and to this day the collection is known and loved across the world. As the first ever collection from Royal Copenhagen, Blue Fluted Plain is known as "Pattern no. 1". Therefore, the number 1 is painted underneath every single piece of Blue Fluted Plain porcelain, as it always has been.

Through 247 years, the collection with its timeless elegance, distinctive blue colour and classic fluting has become a piece of Danish cultural history and has cemented itself as a true classic.

The meaning behind the name

Blue Fluted Plain is also known as the "mussel" painted pattern, and though many old tales guess at the meaning behind the name, no one knows for sure. Some claim the name refers to the pattern’s landscape of fluted and plain sections, which resemble the shape of a mussel. Others, like former Artistic Director Arnold Krog, claimed the name derived from the cobalt blue colour used in the handpainted decorations - a colour also referred to as "mussel colour".

A craft passed down through generations

Blue Fluted Plain is still produced exactly as it was in 1775, og the tradition and craft behind the painting of the pattern has been passed down from blue painter to blue painter. Each piece of porcelain is handled like a piece of art, carefully painted by hand.
