Shot, poisoned, trapped and destroyed

Our latest report on crimes against birds of prey shows that the illegal killings continue. We look at the impact on species including Buzzards, Peregrines, Goshawks and Red Kites, and share a UK map of persecution.

The latest on UK bird crime

Hello -

This week we published Patterns of persecution, our latest report on crimes against birds of prey. It’s a harrowing read. Even though all birds of prey are protected by law, the crimes continue, with birds shot, poisoned and trapped, and eggs and nests destroyed.

Our report shows the devastation inflicted on our birds of prey, with persecution having a stark impact on their populations in some areas. For one of our rarest species, the Hen Harrier, illegal killing is the main reason their populations remain so low in England and Scotland.

Take a look for the latest insights, a UK map of persecution and the simple action you can take to protect birds of prey.

Also this issue, we celebrate some positive news for species, including the return of the Dartford Warbler. Plus take an instant nature break with our live wildlife cameras.

Happy wildlife watching.

PS Our friends at Butterfly Conservation are on a mission to find Britain’s favourite butterfly. Vote here!

Dartford Warbler

Dartford Warbler populations soar on RSPB nature reserves

A landmark heathland bird survey, run in partnership with British Trust for Ornithology and Natural England, shows these distinctive songbirds have made a remarkable recovery. Balancing on the edge of UK extinction in the 1960s, vital habitat restoration work is now helping them to thrive.
