The Story Behind Stillwater

Schoolhouse Product Design Team here — with the Stillwater Quilt back in stock, we wanted to give you a little peek behind the scenes at one of our favorite Schoolhouse designs.

One of our favorite parts of what we do is seeing an idea move from sketch to something you can actually live with. Stillwater was about a year in the making, from the first floral sketches to testing weaving techniques and developing the final colorways.

We wanted a floral quilt that felt distinctly different from the geometric patterns already in our bedding collection, so we looked to early 1900s American quilts for inspiration. We were especially drawn to a quilt made in Stillwater, Oklahoma, whose mirrored floral motif reminded us of flowers reflected on the surface of a quiet pond. The name stuck.

One detail you might not notice at first: Stillwater isn't constructed like a traditional quilt. Its dimensional, quilted texture comes from a custom woven fabric, creating the effect entirely through the weaving process. After testing more than a dozen colors and techniques, we landed on the final version. It’s those little decisions that make product design so rewarding, and they’re what make Stillwater feel so uniquely Schoolhouse to us.
