The question I ask every room

Mine or a client's, it's always the same question: How do you want this to feel? Not how should it look. Not what should it have. How should it feel when you walk in.

That question gave me three completely different answers in three rooms of this house. Here's a closer look.

"The main kitchen does the work. This one keeps the work from being interrupted. A second sink, a second dishwasher, the fridge tucked into a wall of windows — so when one person's cooking and someone else wants a glass of water, nobody's standing in anyone's way. Most kitchens are designed for a magazine. This one is designed for a Tuesday night.”

The Primary Bedroom

A BREATH AT THE END OF THE DAY

“Here's where I get opinionated: most primary bedrooms are too big. They become the place clothes pile up, not the place you actually rest. So I right-sized this one. Grasscloth on the walls for warmth. A drum chandelier for softness. A floor mirror across from the windows to bounce the light around. A room scaled to its real purpose doesn't feel small — it feels like a retreat.”
