⢠Stay Warm & Dry: Layer up with synthetic or wool base layers. If possible, sleep off the ground and add a wool or heated blanket on top of your cot or air mattress for extra insulation. When we donāt have access to electricity, we run our electric blankets off a battery pack to stay toasty all night.
⢠Cozy Sleep with HEST: The SHIFTPOD crew swears by our HEST Foamy Mattress and Down Comforter--their temperature-resilient memory foam performs amazingly in cold conditions.
⢠Heating: We recommend using a small electric or diesel heater to keep your SHIFTPOD warm. These options are safe, efficient, and effective in colder conditions.
ā ļø Important: We do not recommend propane heaters. Propane will produce condensation inside your SHIFTPOD, which can lead to mold and mildew.
⢠Ventilation is Key: Even in cold weather, crack a window or vent to keep airflow moving and reduce condensation inside your SHIFTPOD.
⢠Rain Ready: Always use your rainfly/blast shield in wet conditions for extra protection.
⢠Tarps: Our new PVC tub floor is waterproof in up to 3 inches of rain and you don't need a ground tarp. If you choose to add one, make sure itās slightly smaller than your SHIFTPOD footprint so water can drain off the skirt. If the tarp extends beyond the SHIFTPOD footprint, water can pool under your tent and cause leaks in older model floors.
⢠Stake It Down: Always secure your SHIFTPOD at the wall hubs. Surprise storms can roll in at night or when youāre away from camp, and proper staking ensures your SHIFTPOD doesnāt go for a tumble.
⢠Snow: Special considerations need to be made when camping in snow. Always use your center pole for support. The SHIFTPOD is still a fabric shelter and can only handle so much weightāwet snow and dry snow weigh differently, so there is no set number of inches it can tolerate. Tap the roof frequently to release accumulating snow.
ā ļø Warning: Do not leave your SHIFTPOD unattended overnight in active snowfall. With enough weight, the center pole can bend and the roof could collapse.
⢠Dry It Out After Trips: After camping in wet conditions, set up your SHIFTPOD indoors or in a garage with a heater running to fully dry it before storage. The multi-layer fabric system can feel dry to the touch but still hold moisture in interior layers, so let it air out for several days to prevent mold or mildew.
⢠Maintenance: After heavy use, apply 303 Fabric Guard or Xanigo UV Protectant to help restore the hydrophobic coating of your SHIFTPOD fabric.
