They've nicknamed it the "witch bee" because the female carries a single blade of dried grass beneath her body, making it look like she's zooming through the air on a miniature broom. 🧹🐝
But here's the part that amazed me.
She isn't flying around for fun, she's building a nursery.
First, she searches through dozens of empty snail shells until she finds one that's just the right size. She lays a single egg inside, seals the entrance, then flies back and forth, sometimes nearly 100 times collecting tiny grass stems one by one.
Finally, she piles the grass over the shell until it's completely hidden from hungry predators.
All that work... For one baby bee. That's one hard working mama. ❤️
It made me think about how many of the world's most important creatures go completely unnoticed. Wild bees don't make honey, and most don't live in hives. They're solitary moms doing all the work themselves.
And yet they're responsible for pollinating countless flowers, fruits, and vegetables that we rely on every day.
Sometimes the smallest creatures have the biggest jobs.
And sometimes...
...they fly around looking like they're riding tiny broomsticks.
Nature is weird. I'm glad it is.
