The beginnings of Constructivism as an art movement had a political tinge. It emerged at the start of the 20th century, amidst the upheaval brought on by the Russian Revolution. It was then that the Russian avant-garde developed a formal design language based entirely on geometric forms that would shape a new social order.
When talking about Constructivism, it is important to differentiate it from abstract painting, which is based on the abstraction of classical subjects such as people, animals or landscapes, i.e. a transformation of the world into an abstract formal language. Constructivism, on the other hand, was born out of mathematics and especially architecture.
In our collection on Constructivism, discover contemporary works by our artists who take on this historical art movement. Be inspired by its clear formal language!
In the magazine we will introduce you to the artist Eef de Graaf, a 2nd generation Constructivist. Through his works we will dive into the principles of this style.
