I've just returned from the most incredible adventure, sailing the Arctic with Atlas Ocean Voyages aboard their stunning World Navigator ship! This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I'm sure I will remember forever, so I wanted to share my experience to hopefully inspire you to tick this fascinating destination off your wish list...
Arriving in Tromsø, I was immediately in awe of the snowy surroundings and mountainous landscapes before even setting foot on the ship. Upon embarkation, we were greeted by a beautiful yacht-style ship with Art Deco influences, enjoying drinks and canapés before being shown to our suites. World Navigator has such a relaxed and intimate onboard atmosphere with attentive staff who remembered everyone's names and preferences straight away, I immediately felt at home!

I stayed in a Horizon Suite throughout my time on board, with a Juliette Window that allowed an incredible glimpse of each destination as we sailed, whilst leaving plenty of space to relax inside. The suite was equipped with lots of storage, a coffee machine and kettle, a fully stocked mini bar and a stunning marble bathroom with a walk-in shower featuring a seat with jets.
The Dome Lounge Bar and Observation Deck on board always provided the best views, whether watching through the windows in the warmth or all wrapped up outside, the landscapes never failed to take my breath away. When we weren't being entertained by the sights from the ship, the onboard performances were so much fun. We watched a local theatre group put on a theatrical performance showcasing their life in Svalbard, and the crew also put on a talent show, plus a raffle and live auction. This was fantastic and showcased some of the crew's hidden talents!

In terms of dining, breakfast, buffet-style lunch and à la carte dinners are all served in the Main Restaurant. We tried most dishes, which were all beautifully prepared, and you could order additional vegetables or potatoes if you wished. Every day there were speciality dishes, as well as the staple tenderloin, chicken and salmon, and a good selection of vegetarian and vegan options for those who want them.
Paula's Pantry was open early and throughout the day, offering smoothies, pastries, fruit, yoghurt and speciality coffees, which were very welcome if you're an earlier riser or feeling peckish straight after an excursion!

Throughout my voyage, we visited a plethora of different ports, enjoying multiple Zodiac landings most days with something new to see at every turn. We started off in Skarsvåg, inhabited by only 48 people and offering us the opportunity to chat with them and find out about their lives. Some of my other highlights were Bear Island, home to thousands of Arctic birds, and Gullybukta, where we did a Zodiac safari and saw walruses and blue icebergs that had fallen from glaciers.
One of the days, we veered off-route with what is known as 'The Captain's Choice'. One of the most thrilling parts of expedition cruising is that often cruise lines won't have a set itinerary and instead will seek out specific sights and wildlife along the way. Our Captain took us as far as 81° north, as close as he could get to the ice edge, and this also happened to be the day I did the Polar Plunge. I was uncertain about doing this before I went, but it was such a thrill, I'm so glad I did and would recommend it to anyone as a polar region rite of passage!

Atlas Ocean Voyages provide everything you need for an expedition sailing, both on board and off. Everyone was very informative, friendly, and professional, but with an excellent sense of humour. The Captain was exceptional and on our last day, provided us with the opportunity to spot a polar bear, which was the highlight of our trip and the perfect way to top off this amazing adventure. |
